Should you shovel the snow off of your deck to improve the life of your fresh stain? The answer is no. Why? Because even if you shovel the snow off of your deck, there will always be at least some frozen water sitting on the stain, and within the wood itself. You’ll never get it all off. You’re going to do more damage with that shovel than the snow and ice would anyway. One thing I would recommend though is to sweep any tree twigs and leafs off of it right before the first snow of the season. This will help a bit. No matter what though, winters are incredibly tough on Southwest Michigan decks. If your stain lasts you 2-3 years then you did it right, or hired the right contractor.
